Cape Town

HYPE have been travelling twice a year to Cape Town, South Africa, with its crystal blue waters resting under the shadow of the magnificent Table Mountain, is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. However we travel to this wonderful city to target the struggling poverty and youth and provide them with sports coaching, teaching and positive activities within parks.

Each trip we take upto 24 young people to provide for lessons and sessions for the young people living within townships. Through travelling to Cape Town for six years HYPE has built  relationships and a trusting bond within these local township communities and schools. Giving us the opportunities to provide the trip of a lifetime for our volunteers.

As a volunteer, you are an essential part of the HYPE Impact team, assisting our efforts in providing children and youth with a better education and a brighter future. Throughout this experience you will have rewarding opportunities to help prepare, and implement and evaluate daily learning activities. Events play a huge part in bringing the best out of all volunteers and the children and young people we work with in the green spaces, schools, parks and beaches we work at.

We encourage volunteers to do their homework on South Africa and Cape Town, and also take time to build a foundation of understanding around the legacy of the Apartheid era in the country.

During the 9-days we will be working in three primary schools and one secondary school delivering a range if fun sessions, delivering activities on Cape Towns sandy beaches aswell as planning and delivering a Vibrant Park event in Green Point Park.

You don’t need coaching or teaching qualifications for this experience, although you need commitment, positivity and a desire to help less privileged children.

Teaching – Over the years on this project we have seen a wide range of teaching lessons delivered to children in Cape Town’s primary and secondary schools. The topic delivery depends on what you the teacher want to deliver and what you are comfortable delivering. If you enjoy learning maths and you are good at maths it makes sense to deliver a maths lesson. For any lesson that is delivered it will be approved by the HYPE team prior to teaching to ensure the lesson runs smooth.

All lessons have to be fun and interactive for the learners and the leader. We have had science students deliver a biology lesson on the human heart to 8-year children in Mitchells Plain. The feedback was outstanding with some of the pupils saying it was the best lesson of their life.

Lessons run for 45 minutes and we would deliver upto 5 lessons per day in the schools. All teachers will be assisted by at least two other students each lesson.

You can include Q&A at the end of your lessons where pupils normally want to know what it is like to live in the UK.

Coaching – The most popular sport in Cape Town is football, all the children we work with follow the English Premier League closely.

In nearly all schools in Cape Town physical education does not feature and is not taught as part of the curriculum. The passion for sport is as high as ever and aswell as football, netball, cricket, rugby, dodgeball, athletics are sports that the children love to play.

Dance is extremely popular also and over the years volunteers have delivered dance lessons from the Macarena to the latest street dance moves.

Sessions run for 45 minutes which consist of an introduction, warm up games, session and small sided games at the end. Again Q&A is always used ta the end of the sessions to enable volunteers and pupils to ask questions to each other.

As Nelson Mandela once said “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.”
